Plastic mold steel: Plastic mold steel is mainly used for manufacturing plastic injection molds, extrusion molds, etc. This type of steel has excellent polishing performance, corrosion resistance, and wear resistance, which can meet the high requirements of plastic products for mold surfaces. Common plastic mold steels include P20, 718H, NAK80, etc.
2, Aluminum alloy
Aluminum alloy is another commonly used metal material in mold making, which has good thermal conductivity, lightweight, and excellent processing performance. Aluminum alloy molds are mainly used to manufacture small and complex components, such as phone cases, automotive parts, etc. Aluminum alloy molds have the advantages of light weight, low cost, and short processing cycle, but compared to steel materials, their hardness and wear resistance are lower, so their service life may be limited.
3, Cast iron
Cast iron is another commonly used material in mold manufacturing, which has good wear resistance, corrosion resistance, and high temperature resistance. Cast iron molds are mainly used to manufacture various die-casting molds, injection molds, extrusion molds, and stretching molds. Cast iron molds have the advantages of low cost, good processing performance, and long service life, but compared to steel materials, their hardness and strength may be slightly lower, so they may not be as good as steel materials in some high demand applications.
4, Non metallic materials
In addition to metallic materials, non-metallic materials also play an important role in mold making. Common non-metallic materials include ceramics, plastics, rubber, etc.
Ceramic materials: Ceramic materials have the characteristics of high hardness, good wear resistance, high temperature and high pressure resistance, and are suitable for manufacturing molds used under high temperature and high pressure. However, ceramic materials have high brittleness, difficulty in processing and assembly, and high cost, which limits their practical application.
Plastic materials: Plastic materials have excellent processability, wear resistance, and strength, making them suitable for manufacturing large and complex molds. Common plastic materials include polyethylene, polystyrene, polycarbonate, etc. However, the heat resistance and corrosion resistance of plastic molds are relatively poor, so their service life may be limited.
Rubber material: Rubber material is mainly used for seals, buffers, etc. in molds. It has excellent elasticity, wear resistance, and corrosion resistance, which can meet the requirements of molds for sealing and buffering performance. However, rubber materials have low strength and hardness, making them unsuitable for molds that can withstand significant pressure and impact.
5, Composite materials
Composite materials are a new type of material composed of two or more materials with different properties combined by physical or chemical methods. Composite materials have excellent comprehensive properties, such as high strength, high hardness, high wear resistance, high heat resistance, etc. In mold making, composite materials are commonly used to manufacture mold components that require high performance, such as mold cavities, cores, etc. However, the cost and processing difficulty of composite materials are high, so in practical applications, it is necessary to comprehensively consider factors such as cost and performance.
6, Principles of Material Selection
When selecting materials for mold making, multiple factors need to be considered comprehensively, such as product usage requirements, mold working conditions, material performance characteristics, and cost. Here are some common material selection principles:
Select materials based on product usage requirements: The performance indicators that the mold needs to meet are determined by the product usage requirements. For example, for mold components that require significant pressure and impact, materials with higher hardness and better wear resistance can be selected; For mold components that need to withstand high temperatures, materials with good heat resistance can be selected.
Select materials based on the working conditions of the mold: The working conditions of the mold include temperature, pressure, friction, etc. Different working conditions have different requirements for mold materials. For example, molds working at high temperatures need to choose materials with good heat resistance; The mold working under high pressure and high friction conditions needs to choose materials with high hardness and good wear resistance.
Select materials based on their performance characteristics: Different materials have different performance characteristics. When selecting mold materials, it is necessary to fully understand the performance characteristics of various materials and make choices based on actual needs.
