1, Definition and Function of Flow Channels
Definition: The flow channel in a mold, in short, is a channel system that guides molten metal or molten metal from the injection molding machine nozzle (or die-casting machine chamber) into the mold cavity. This system includes main channels, branch channels, and gates, which together ensure that materials can smoothly and efficiently enter the mold cavity and complete the filling process.
Function:
Guidance and distribution: The main function of the flow channel is to guide the molten metal or molten metal to flow into the mold cavity according to the predetermined path, ensuring the smooth progress of the filling process. At the same time, the design of the diversion channel also needs to consider how to evenly distribute materials to avoid the occurrence of local overheating or underinjection phenomena.
Temperature and pressure control: The design of the flow channel also involves controlling the temperature and pressure of the melt. A reasonable channel layout can reduce the temperature loss and pressure drop of the melt during the flow process, ensuring that the material still has sufficient fluidity and filling capacity when it reaches the mold cavity.
Reducing waste and costs: Optimizing channel design can also reduce waste generation and lower production costs. For example, by using hot runner technology, the reuse of main and branch channels can be achieved, reducing the waste generated by material solidification in the channel.
2, Types of flow channels
According to the different types of molds, materials, and production requirements, flow channels can be divided into various types, mainly including:
Cold runner: The most common type of runner, where materials solidify into waste after flowing through the runner. The cold runner design is simple and suitable for most molds, but it generates a lot of waste.
Hot runner: The material inside the channel is kept in a molten state through a heating device, achieving the recycling of materials. Hot runner technology can significantly reduce waste generation and improve production efficiency, but it is costly and complex to maintain.
Tap gate: a special form of gate characterized by a small gate area and precise positioning, which helps reduce gate marks on the product and improve appearance quality. Tap gates are often used in conjunction with hot runner technology.
Side gates, hidden gates, etc.: These types of gates have their own characteristics. For example, side gates are suitable for large or deep cavity products, while hidden gates can leave smaller marks on the surface of the product.
3, Design principles for flow channels
Balanced distribution: Ensure that the melt or molten metal can be evenly and quickly filled into every corner of the mold cavity, avoiding local overheating or underfilling.
Shortest path: On the premise of ensuring balanced distribution, try to shorten the length of the flow channel as much as possible to reduce the temperature loss and pressure drop of the melt during the flow process.
Easy to clean and maintain: The flow channel design should facilitate the cleaning of residual waste and impurities to reduce mold maintenance costs and time.
Considering cost-effectiveness: While pursuing high quality and efficiency, it is also necessary to comprehensively consider cost factors and choose the most cost-effective flow channel design scheme.
