A hot runner mold is an injection mold with a heating system installed in the mold. This heating system usually consists of a heater and a temperature control system, which ensures uniform plastic flow throughout the entire injection molding process by maintaining the temperature of the molten plastic in the mold. Hot runner molds are widely used in the production of high-precision and complex shaped plastic parts.
Cold runner molds are the opposite of hot runner molds and do not use heating systems. On the contrary, cold runner molds rely on external air or water cooling systems to cool the molten plastic and solidify it into the desired shape. Cold runner molds are usually used for injection molding production that does not require high requirements for product appearance and surface quality.
2. Working principle
The heating system in the hot runner mold maintains a constant temperature of the molten plastic in the mold throughout the entire injection molding process. After the mold is closed, the heater starts working, transferring heat energy to the surface of the mold and the molten plastic to ensure its fluidity. This precise temperature control helps to reduce the molding cycle and improve production efficiency.
The cold runner mold does not have a built-in heating system. On the contrary, they rely on external cooling systems, usually air or water cooling. Once molten plastic is injected into the mold, the external cooling system quickly lowers the temperature, allowing the plastic to solidify and form quickly. This type of injection molding is usually used for applications that are less sensitive to the appearance of the product.
3. Comparison of advantages and disadvantages
The advantages of hot runner molds
High production efficiency: Due to constant temperature control, cooling time is reduced and production efficiency is improved.
Suitable for high-precision products: For products with complex shapes and high precision requirements, hot runner molds are more suitable.
Reducing plastic waste: Temperature control helps to reduce the waste of molten plastic.
Disadvantages of hot runner molds
High initial investment: Due to the presence of heating systems, the manufacturing and purchasing costs of hot runner molds are relatively high.
High maintenance costs: Regular maintenance of the heating system is required, which increases operating costs.
The advantages of cold runner molds
Low cost: Compared to hot runner molds, cold runner molds have lower manufacturing and purchasing costs.
Suitable for large-scale production: For large-scale products with low appearance requirements, cold runner molds are more cost-effective.
Easy maintenance: No need for complex heating systems, maintenance is relatively simple.
Disadvantages of cold runner molds
Relatively long production cycle: The cooling time is longer, resulting in a relatively longer production cycle.
Not suitable for high-precision products: For high-precision and complex shaped products, cold runner molds may not meet the requirements.
