What is the difference between plastic injection molds and die-casting molds?

一,The two molds are very different in terms of the materials used to make them.

plastic injection molds are molds that are used to shape plastic items. It warms plastic particles until they melt, then injects them into the mold cavity under high pressure. After cooling, it makes the plastic parts you want. Some common materials are ABS, PP, PE, PC, PA, and a number of modified materials and engineering plastics.

Die casting molds are mostly used to shape metal parts, notably non-ferrous metals with low melting points as aluminum alloys, zinc alloys, magnesium alloys, and others. In the die casting process, molten metal is injected into a metal mold cavity at fast speed and under very high pressure. Then, it is quickly cooled to form. This procedure is more suited for working with metal than with plastic.

These two molds have gone in distinct directions in terms of design philosophy, structural strength, and usage environment from the start because the molding materials are so diverse.

二,Injection molding is "gentler" than die casting when it comes to the molding process.

The temperature for plastic injection molding is normally between 180 and 300 degrees Celsius, and the pressure of the injection is quite easy to adjust. The mold doesn't have to deal with a lot of impact or heat throughout the molding process. The whole process maintains a steady rhythm, which makes it good for long-term, large-scale production.

The working conditions for die-casting molding, on the other hand, are substantially stricter. The temperature of molten metal is frequently over 600 degrees Celsius. The liquid metal enters the mold cavity at a very high speed and pressure, which causes a lot of erosion, impact, and thermal fatigue on the mold. This is also why die-casting molds need to be made of high-quality mold steel and go through complicated heat and surface treatment.

To put it simply, injection molds are more concerned with accuracy and stability, while die-casting molds are more concerned with being able to withstand high temperatures, impacts, and fatigue.

三,The design focus changes depending on the mold's structure and how long it will last.

When it comes to structural design, plastic injection molds care more about how the product looks, how accurate the dimensions are, how easily the mold comes off, and how consistent the molding is. To suit the needs of how things look, molds are often made with polished surfaces, textured surfaces, and even high-gloss mirror structures. Injection molds also use a lot of different parts, like ejector pins, sliders, and slanted tops, to shape complicated plastic structures.

Die casting molds care more about how strong the structure is and how well it can get rid of heat. The mold must have a good gate, overflow groove, and cooling system to keep the molten metal from cooling too quickly and shrinking too much, which can cause problems including porosity, shrinkage, and cracks. Die-casting molds are usually thicker and have a lot more space than injection molds of the same size.

With the right care, injection molds can often last for hundreds of thousands or even millions of cycles. But because die-casting molds are exposed to high-temperature metal erosion for a long time, the procedures and materials used usually have a bigger effect on how long they last.

四,From the perspective of product performance and appearance, each has its own advantages

Plastic injection molding has many benefits, such as being very flexible in terms of look, having a lot of structural complexity, and being light. With injection molds, it's easy to make snap fasteners, reinforcing ribs, thin-walled structures, and complicated internal cavities. That's also why businesses like medical devices, consumer electronics, and household appliances virtually usually put injection molding technology first.

Die-casting molding has many benefits, such as high strength, good dimensional stability, and better thermal and electrical conductivity. Metal die-casting parts are better for things like load-bearing structures, parts that need to dissipate heat, or products that need a metallic texture, including car parts, motor housings, and mechanical structural components.there is no clear

五,From the perspective of cost structure, there is a difference between initial investment and long-term returns

Many buyers think that injection molds are "cheap" and die-casting molds are "expensive." This remark isn't completely true, but it does show a part of the truth. In general, die-casting molds are more expensive to make than injection molds of the same size and complexity. The reason is that the steel used to make the mold is of a higher grade, it is harder to work with, and the costs of heat treatment and mold testing are also higher.
