What are the five types of injection mold?

Injection molding is a versatile manufacturing process used to produce a wide range of plastic products. There are several types of injection molds that are commonly used in the industry. Here are five main types of injection molds:

Two-Plate Mold:
The two-plate mold is the simplest and most commonly used type of injection mold. It consists of two plates, known as the cavity plate and the core plate, which are held together by the mold base. The cavity plate forms the outer surface of the molded part, while the core plate forms the inner surface. When the mold is closed, molten plastic is injected into the cavity, and once it solidifies, the mold is opened to eject the finished part.

Three-Plate Mold:
The three-plate mold is similar to the two-plate mold but includes an additional plate called the runner plate or the sprue plate. The runner plate creates a separate channel for the molten plastic to enter the cavity, allowing for more complex part geometries and the incorporation of multiple gates. The three-plate mold enables easier ejection of the finished part as the runner system is located on a separate plate.

Hot Runner Mold:
In a hot runner mold, the plastic material is injected into the mold through a heated manifold system rather than through a cold runner system. The hot runner system consists of heated channels that deliver molten plastic directly to the mold cavities, eliminating the need for a separate runner and reducing waste. Hot runner molds are preferred for high-volume production as they minimize cycle time and material wastage.

Stack Mold:
A stack mold, also known as a stack-up mold or a tandem mold, is used to produce multiple parts simultaneously. It consists of two or more mold parting surfaces stacked on top of each other. The molten plastic is injected into each mold cavity, and the stack is then separated to eject the finished parts. Stack molds are commonly used for high-volume production to increase productivity and reduce manufacturing costs.

Insert Mold:
An insert mold is used when a preformed component, such as a metal insert or another plastic part, needs to be encapsulated with plastic. The insert is placed into the mold cavity, and molten plastic is injected around it, forming a single integrated part. Insert molding allows for the creation of complex assemblies with multiple materials and eliminates the need for additional assembly steps.

These are five common types of injection molds used in the plastic manufacturing industry. Each type offers specific advantages and is chosen based on the requirements of the desired product, production volume, and cost considerations.
