What are the drawbacks of extrusion molding?

The extrusion molding process has certain limitations in the selection of raw materials. Due to the need for certain fluidity and plasticity of raw materials during the extrusion process, not all plastic materials are suitable for extrusion molding. Some high viscosity and high melting point plastic materials are prone to problems such as mold blockage and uneven flow during the extrusion process, resulting in unstable product quality and even inability to produce. This to some extent limits the application scope of extrusion molding technology.
The precision control of extrusion molding process is relatively difficult. Although modern extrusion equipment has achieved a high level of automation and intelligence, it is still difficult to completely eliminate the influence of various factors in the actual production process, such as temperature fluctuations, screw speed changes, and uneven raw material composition. These factors may cause fluctuations in the dimensional accuracy, surface quality, and other aspects of the extruded product, affecting the overall quality of the product.
The production efficiency of extrusion molding technology is limited to a certain extent. Although extrusion molding can achieve continuous production, in practical operation, due to the time-consuming process of equipment debugging, mold replacement, and raw material replacement, the production efficiency cannot reach the optimal state. In addition, extrusion molding technology is more suitable for large-scale production, but its flexibility and adaptability are relatively poor for small batch and multi variety production needs.
In terms of energy consumption and environmental protection, the extrusion molding process also has certain shortcomings. During the extrusion process, a large amount of thermal energy is required to heat and soften plastic raw materials, which not only increases production costs but may also cause certain thermal pollution to the environment. Meanwhile, some plastic raw materials may produce harmful gases or substances during the heating process, posing a potential threat to the production environment and the health of operators.
In addition, the design and manufacturing of molds for extrusion molding technology is also a complex and costly task. The structure and accuracy of the mold directly affect the quality and production efficiency of the product. Therefore, when developing new products or adjusting product specifications, it is usually necessary to redesign and manufacture molds, which not only increases production costs but may also prolong product launch time.
In addition, the extrusion molding process requires high skills and experience from operators. Due to the control and adjustment of multiple process parameters involved in the extrusion process, such as temperature, pressure, speed, etc., operators need to have certain professional knowledge and practical experience to ensure production stability and product quality. However, there is currently a relatively insufficient supply of personnel proficient in extrusion forming technology in the market, which has become a factor restricting the application of extrusion forming technology.
In summary, although extrusion molding technology has many advantages, there are some obvious shortcomings in raw material selection, precision control, production efficiency, energy consumption and environmental protection, mold design and manufacturing, and operational requirements. These shortcomings to some extent limit the application scope and development speed of extrusion molding technology. Therefore, in practical applications, we need to conduct in-depth research and analysis on these shortcomings, find effective improvement measures and optimization plans, in order to improve the performance and competitiveness of the extrusion molding process.
